Artist Statement
The work I create is intended to generate conversation and introspection about observable symptoms and the unforeseen costs of seductive preoccupations. Fueled by obsessions, desires, and the passions of the individual and their society; garishly glazed and painted surfaces embellish the hollow formed figurative ceramic sculptures while the thrown vessels exercise refinement of form and attention to the surface. Line and form coalesce and contrast with a loud palette of color, coupling meticulous decoration and contemporary design.
A compassionate observer witnessing modern angst while struggling with morality and mortality, I see both the individual and the consequences of their risky, self-indulgent behavior. Inspired by street art and its intense focus on the present, this content is saturated with anxiety for the future and provokes pity, discomfort, and disgust seasoned by an appreciation for craft.
In seeking escape, these creations morph and emerge from their self-destructive behavior implying hope for an experienced humanity. Communicating through sculptural form, thrown refinement, illusionistic drawing, and scientific illustration these sculptures fuse the energy of the street with academia, forming the aesthetic basis of my work.
